Modern life is affected in many ways by mechanisms dependent upon hydraulic systems. Everything from the manufacturing sector to city garbage trucks and snow plows relies on this system to provide them with the power to complete the job. Yet, while they often seem impervious to everything, this is not the case. Extreme temperatures can reduce their effectiveness. To counteract high-temperature issues, many turn to hydraulic fluid additives.

High Temperatures and Its Effect on Hydraulic Fluid

High temperatures can have a devastating effect on unadulterated hydraulic fluid. An extended exposure can result in permanent deterioration and/or severe reduction in viscosity. As deterioration occurs, the result is oxidation and the development of sludge. The chemical reaction as the oil and any additives in it degrade compromises the functioning of the fluid as well as the entire hydraulic system.

As the viscosity of the hydraulic oil is reduced, the possibility increases of both the lubricants and hydraulic oils becoming ineffective in protecting hydraulic system components. This includes such qualities as:

  • Friction reduction
  • Prevention of abrasive damage
  • Inhibiting the overall speed of wear.

Changes in viscosity may also impair the actions of the actual hydraulic fluid. As a result, the overall performance of the entire hydraulic system is in jeopardy.

Using Hydraulic Fluid Additives

To address the problems caused by high temperatures, companies opt for hydraulic fuel containing the right additives. The most common hydraulic fluid additives contain a Viscosity Index (VI) improving additive. This can alleviate many of the problems associated with high temperatures.
