Cleaning A Fishing Reel – A Guide to Keeping Your Reel in Good Condition

Proper maintenance of your fishing reel doesn’t just increase its life span, it also improves its effectiveness. Cleaning a fishing reel is not just blasting it with a sprayer like your garden hose. Doing such can only damage your fishing reel. If you have invested in a fishing reel like the Abu Garcia Silver Max reel, then you should take proper care of it. Here are some tips on keeping your fishing reel in great condition.

Check Your Cleaning Tools

For cleaning a fishing reel, you will need a small screwdriver, a pair of tweezers, toothbrush, and a toothpick plus a wrench. You also have to prepare your cleaning fluid, it can be oil or grease, depending on your preference. Have a clean and dry cloth for finishing touch.

If you are casting in saltwater, you need to clean your reel with lukewarm or hot water. If you do freshwater fishing, cold water will do. Saltwater anglers should clean and wash their fishing reel after each casting.

Cleaning the Sides of Your Reel

Do not forget to clean the underside of your fishing reel. You can remove the drag know to get into the spool. Wipe it with a clean cloth then apply grease or oil. For an Abu Garcia Silver Max reel, use oil or grease that is for an Abu Garcia product only. Apply oil on the handle knobs, line rollers, folding handle and bail arm springs.

You should apply grease or oil to each bearing and gear. Greasing the bearings and gears doesn’t need to be every month though. It can be done once a year or when you are doing a full service.

When to Do a Full Service?

A full-service means dissembling your fishing reel to clean all parts, including bearings and gears. You can do this once a year. If you are a regular angler, twice a year is highly recommended.
